Package Overview

This package is appropriate for a group that prefers a slow pace during the trek. This gives more time to acclimatize with the area making the trek easier.

Day 1:

Depart Nairobi to our base lodge for acclimatization. It is located 2000m on the western slopes of Mt Kenya. We will have an afternoon walk through the forest in the company of  a local guide to lead us through as we explore the lower montane forest while heading to the famous Mau Mau caves.

Day 2: 

Drive to the Sirimon Park Gate after breakfast. Commence our trek through the splendid montane forests, giant heather areas and bamboo before reaching the high altitude moorland and our accommodation site at Old Moses Camp 3,340m. This trek takes close to 3 hours 740m.

Day 3:

Start our ascension to the awesome Likii Valley. This is an area of beautiful high altitude plants such as Ostrich Plum Lobelia and Cabbage Groundsel. Arrive at the Likii North hut at 3990m for overnight having taken 3-4 hours, with an optional acclimatization hike in afternoon up onto Terere peak.

Day 4: 

Ascend the impressive Mackinder Valley trekking past various plant species to arrive at Shipton’s camp at 4,236m for overnight. This is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glaciers, with its resident populations of rock hyrax and beautiful sunbirds.

Day 5:

After breakfast ascend Hausberg col (4700m) then descend steeply to Hausberg valley and Oblong tarns before making a steep ascent, crossing huge boulders through Two Tarn. Descend into Teleki valley after picnic lunch and head for the Naromoru summit trail for a rocky track steep climb leading to Austrian Camp for overnight – 4780m. This hike takes 5-6 hours.

Day 6:

Begin this day early to reach Pt. Lenana 4,895m at sunrise. The climb is on frozen scree with some scrambling on the ridge of the Lewis glacier. The climb takes around 2 hours with a reward of Mt. Kilimanjaro views on the horizon. Descend for roughly 3 hours to Makinder’s camp for breakfast. Spent the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 7:

In the morning trek to Naromoru park gate (2600m) 5 hrs and connect with the vehicle for transfer back to Mountain Rock Lodge for a welcome hot shower and lunch before the journey back to Nairobi.
