Day 3: Nyungwe Forest National Park

This morning we enter the lush rainforest in the search of the chimpanzee after an early breakfast. It is home to more than 300 bird species, 24 of which are regional endemics and over 100 varieties of orchids and butterflies which can be seen in this scenic forest. In the afternoon we have the opportunity to explore the area. Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxing after the trek. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4: Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, return to Nyungwe forest to track the black and white colobus monkeys. Along the way have the chance to see thirteen species of primates including chimpanzee, Rwenzori colobus and l’Hoest’s monkey. The colobus monkeys live in large groups, including a four hundred-strong semi-habituated group thought to be the largest troop of arboreal primates in Africa. In the afternoon head back to the lodge for lunch and relaxing or go birding in the area.

Day 5: Nyungwe Forest National Park – Kibuye

This morning we have the chance to view the forest from a canopy walkway. We will have a 45 minute walk into the forest and then walk above the tree tops on a suspended bridge. This gives magnificent views of one of African’s largest temperate rainforests and offers the great opportunity to view primates and birds from a higher ground. In the afternoon drive for 4hrs to Kibuye on the shores of the gorgeous Lake Kivu. In the afternoon get to relax and enjoy the lodge’s facilities. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 6: Kibuye – Gisenyi – Volcanoes National Park

In the morning we will drive from Kibuye to Gisenyi with a lovely view of Lake Kivu and the multiple islands. Break for lunch in Gisenyi then drive to Volcanoes National Park. The Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen, bamboo forests, open grassland, swamp and heath. This park is best known for the mountain gorillas. Other mammals found in the park are the golden monkey, black-fronted duiker, buffalo, spotted hyena and bush buck. There are 178 recorded bird species with at least 13 species and 16 subspecies endemic to the Virunga and Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 7 & 8: Gorilla tracking at Volcanoes National Park

Today, you will go to the park headquarters for briefing from the park rangers. There are a total of 64 gorilla permits available each day with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting any one group.

The moment the trekkers are put into groups, each group’s Lead Guide briefs the trekkers of the trekking procedures in the presence of gorillas. After the briefing drive up the mountain to the starting point. Trekking can take from two to six or more hours if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them. The guides stop frequently to allow trekkers a chance to rest and take photos along the way.

After the trek, transfer to your Lodge for lunch. Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 9: Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

This morning we have the opportunity to explore Volcanoes National Park in the search for the rare golden monkeys. There is a fully habituated group of the beautiful primates in the park and this is one of the only places in Africa where this activity is offered. In the afternoon drive back to your Kigali hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Kigali – Nairobi

This morning we have a city tour, including a visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre and other cultural sites. In the afternoon you are transferred to the airport for your return flight.
